Some artists come along who's work makes us think that surely their output has been touched by the hand of God. Lampreia is one of those artist. The words reverence, and piety immediately come to mind upon viewing this artist's work. A. Jose Lampreia was born in 1955 Lisbon, Portugal. Having lived and worked for the past 20 years in London, England. Lampreia returned to Portugal in the summer of 2005. He lives and work near Lisbon. The artist likes to paint with acrylics and oils. In winter, Lampreia works mostly with acrylics because it dries faster and this allow him to stop working on a painting sooner than possible with oils. Painting with oils is another matter. The oils properties allows Lampreia to interact with the canvas in a more tactile way, often using his hands to paint and achieving a different kind of relation with his work. The imagery, passion and emotion in each work comes about spontaneously and unconsciously. Lampreia almost never plans his paintings because in the end they always become something quite different.
