THINGS SEEN, KNOWN, & FELT
New Works by Terence E Jackson

Shall I speak of the time before time..? Of fairytales? The future..? No, tonight, let us speak of ancient evenings...

My latest exhibit - ANGELS & INSECTS is very much about incorporating paper cutting with the surrealist technique of automatism to gain insight into a subject. My process also included the deconstruction of the subject matter until I was leaved with images that could evokes a wide range of subliminal emotions. When conceiving these paintings, one thing was very apparent to me, I was looking at my subjects through some great microscopic lens. It is of interest to note that these paintings are also closely related to my sense of touch. All of them were created without the tradition use of a brush. They have been shaped simply by my hands & guided by intuition.

The sinuous, curving lines. The colliding of colors. These elements in my pieces are meant to have multiple meanings and extract a conversation with the viewer. I am not concerned with the replication of imagery. I am trying to exorcise the viewer away from the logical concept of time and space. If these images exist and I believe they do, then they are to be found in that place that existed before the great rift between man and nature/God. A place which exists beyond the reach of consciousness. Beyond oral language. With these paintings, I have tried to capture the pulse of silence that lingers after the words, after the images. The haunting sound of an angel’s beating wing.

"Angels need an assumed body, not for themselves, but on our account, namely, so that by conversing familiarly with men they may give evidence of that intellectual companionship which men expect to have with them in the life to come". - Thomas Aquinas

The original blueprints for the heavens and the earth did not include man. It was God’s later decision to create humans, that brought about the great War in Heaven. Lucifer considered this an insult, and rallied discontent amongst other angels who felt the act was degrading since they were God's first creation themselves.

Today it is we humans, who have come to fear science. Science is the constant reminder that nature/Angels will have the last word. We are no longer welcomed here. The gate to Eden has been forever shut. The Angels have become our enemy. Which might lead one to say that my works can in fact be looked upon as a conversation between myself and nature/God about a time when angels and insects lived as one...

“I know this sounds crazy, but ever since yesterday on the road, I've been seeing this shape. This means something. This is important. Have you ever looked at something and it's crazy and then you looked at it in another way and it's not crazy at all?…”

- from the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 1977
