Born in Augusta, Georgia on March 7, 1978, Rushdan Waheed grew up in Columbia, S. C. where he first became aware of his talent for creating while still in kindergarten. Back then, his works could be seen hanging on the family refrigerator. Waheed believes that his painting talent comes from his father who painted houses for a living.
"One incident that really stands out to me was when I was really young. I was trying to create a portrait of Pinocchio and being unsuccessful, I get really mad and balled up the work. My father came over and I can still remember him telling me, "Son, you're never gonna get it like that. You have to have patience and take you time."
My father then proceeded to sit down with me and we drew Pinocchio.
Rushdan Waheed beautifully merges stark realism with surreal esthetics to create works that are almost romantic in nature. Born out of experience. These are works of life. Representing the long and winding road towards one’s salvation. In Waheed's works truth, honesty, forgiveness, and hope all meet upon a road of convergence.
"All of my work talks about places I’ve been. Things that I've seen. Things I felt and things I’ve done."
This is indeed where Waheed's strength lies. His ability to feel the moment and then brilliantly capture it without any sense of judgment floors the viewer with all the emotional punch of a professional prizefighter.
“Painting takes me to a place where I want to be. It's like therapy for me to be able to express all these things I can’t say or explain in words. You can see what one feels in my paintings. It may sound corny but I always want people to remember that a picture is worth a thousand words.”
The artist currently resides in Atlanta, GA.
